I live in the Gold Coast hinterland. My ceramics journey began in 2003 after study at the ANU (Australian National University) for the Advanced Ceramic Diploma. It was the most amazing four year experience, and set me on a journey that I still love today, 20 years later.

I work in the Japanese nerikomi technique of coloured and layered clays. Using an adaptation of this technique, the general pattern outcome can be manipulated and controlled but the exact result of the shapes and colour is always a surprise. It’s this randomness that I find most intriguing and beguiling.

In most ceramics, the colour, pattern and glazing is applied just on the outside of the clay used to form the vessel or sculpture. The nerikomi process involves using stains to colour the fine white porcelain clay body. This means that the colour is completely embodied in the clay and goes right through the wall of the vessel.

I have developed my own library of colours over many years. I start by putting together contrasting and complimentary colours to build up large blocks of flowing colours. The block is then manipulated and sliced into slabs which are used to form functional and non-functional vessels.
